Purpose:
- To allow those student/athletes who have not been a part of the program an opportunity to try rowing and learn the basics in a less competitive and relaxed atmosphere
- For experienced team members to improve their skills and rowing technique while maintaining their fitness level
Who can join:
This years program is open to any Central High School athlete (new or returning) interested in rowing as well as any Northern or Eastern High School athlete with previous rowing experience.
Commitment:
- Practice sessions will be held Monday through Thursday from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. We may incorporate a few Saturday morning sessions if the athletes are willing.
- The fall season will start on Monday, August 25th and continue until the end of October.
- We understand that some athletes are involved in other school related activities such as marching band or other sports. The fall season is NOT mandatory and therefore each athlete can determine their level of commitment. The more practices that are attended, the more the athlete will be prepared for the Spring season which starts in March. (As marching band practices two nights a week, we do not expect those members to attend rowing practice on the same nights.)
- Participation in fall rowing WILL NOT affect the opportunity for an athlete to compete for a position on the team during the Spring Season. All athletes will be given the same opportunity in the Spring including potential new team members.
Competitions:
- We have scheduled a few competitive opportunities to race. There will be at least (2) "Head Races", where the boats compete against each other while "on the clock". Each boat crosses the starting line on 10 second intervals and race against each other and the clock. These races are typically 3 to 4 thousand meters in length. One race will be at the Grand Rapids Rowing Club and the other will be at the Forest Hills Boathouse.
Team inter-squad scrimmage: Saturday, September 27 Re-scheduled from 9/20 due to flooding GRRA Head Race, Saturday, October 11 at Grand Rapids Rowing Association Boathouse (Revised again) FHC Head Race, Saturday, October 18 at Forest Hills Boathouse
Cost:
- We will be asking for a donation of $75 to participate in the fall rowing program. This cost will cover all practice and competitive opportunities and covers our expenses to run the program. (Please note that FHC Rowing will never turn down an athlete for financial reasons)
