Grand Rapids Spring Sprints, Saturday, March 22, 2008

A late season snow storm did not deter 400 west Michigan athletes from competing at this years Grand Rapids Spring Sprints indoor rowing regatta. The event was hosted by Forest Hills Central High School with teams from East Grand Rapids, Forest Hills Central, Forest Hills Eastern, Forest Hills Northern, Grand Rapids Rowing Association, Lowell, Northview and Rockford. Events were held for both men and women in Novice, Coxswain, Lightweight and Open categories.

The FHC crew team achieved outstanding results this Saturday as they narrowly missed first place in the overall team standings by only 7 points. FHC had a much smaller team this year compared to years past and we were able to hang in there against some larger teams.

Those FHC athletes winning medals were:

Gold - Hanna Messer, Women’s Lightweight

Silver - Kelsey Taylor, Women’s Novice

Silver - Alex Myers, Men's Lightweight

Bronze - Brandon Streb, Men's Lightweight

Bronze, Tyler Lenderink, Men's Coxswain

Other FHC athletes earning points towards the overall included:

4th place - Lauren Niswonger, Women's Novice

4th place - Dana Stemo, Women's Lightweight

4th place - Leah Williams, Women's Open

5th place - Freddie Morgan, Men's Lightweight

5th place - Breanna Cornell, Women’s Lightweight

5th place - Ben Montague, Men's Open

6th place - Anthony Hage, Men's Lightweight

7th place - Michelle Dryer, Women's Lightweight

Points are awarded for the top 10 places in each event except for the coxswain races.

The final point’s standings were:

Rockford - 91

Forest Hills Central - 84

East Grand Rapids - 50

Forest Hills Northern - 38

Forest Hills Eastern - 28

Grand Rapids Rowing - 22

Northview - 9

Lowell - 8

2007 GR Sprints Team Champions!

The Grand Rapids Spring Sprints is an indoor rowing regatta. Competitors race on the Concept2 indoor rower or Erg over a distance of 500 meters, 1500 meters or 2000 meters depending on the classification of the participant. Coxswains will row 500 meters, high school novice (first year rowers) will compete at 1500 meters and all other participants will race the 2000 meter distance.

Each competitor races against the clock. Winners in each division are determined by the best overall time to complete the distance. To aid the rowers, the Concept2 electronic race system is used to track each participant. The system produces a graphic representation of "boat position" for each participant during the race. The graphic is projected onto a large screen in the gymnasium so that the spectators can obtain a visual of where each rower is in the race.

Divisions for high school include: coxswain, novice, lightweight and open for each gender. Medals are awarded to the top 3 finish positions in each event and team points are awarded to the top 10 finish positions. An overall points trophy is awarded to the high school scoring the most points combined from all of the events (except for the coxswains race).

In 2006, college events were added and Grand Valley State Universities Men and Women and the University Of Michigan Men competed at the event.

Overall, the GR Spring Sprints is an exciting event that kicks off the spring rowing season for our high school teams. Bring your enthusiasm and your ear plugs (the gym can get very loud with all of the cheering) to enjoy a great morning of racing.
