Forest Hills Central High School rowing program completes best ever performance at Wyandotte High School Regatta (Wy-Hi).
The Forest Hills Central Rowing program endured a very long day of competition consisting of two weather delays, witnessing swamped boats and ever changing water conditions to ultimately record their best ever performance at the Wyandotte High Schools rowing regatta.
17 Schools from Michigan and Canada competed at the regatta that features 24 events for high school athletes. Racing began at 8AM and was soon delayed at 10:30 because of a very strong south wind that ultimately caused a boat to completely swamp as it was racing on the course. After a 3 hour delay and the winds switching to out of the west, racing was resumed. As the winds picked up speed, the river again turned choppy and two more boats were unable to finish racing as they filled with water. After another 1-1/2 hour delay, the winds began to diminish and racing was resumed. The event coordinators were able to complete 18 of 24 scheduled races. Due to safety concerns and the rough water, all of the small boat events (singles, pairs and doubles) were cancelled.
By the time that FHC finally returned to Grand Rapids after midnight, the exhausted but excited athletes and coaches realized that their performance at this regatta had been the best in the team’s history for this event. “Many of our medals winning boats were not even in contention two weeks ago at the Grand Rapids Invitational. To come away from Wy-HI with this many top finishing crews is a testament to our coaches and athletes. We have worked hard over the past weeks to improve boat speed and we are headed in the positive direction as we approach the Midwest Championships and the State Championships in the next two weeks.”
FHC entered 22 boats across 17 events. 12 boats made the finals across 11 events not including the entries in the men’s and women’s pair being cancelled. Results:
